Sydney Couta Boat Club History

Early in 2015, a group of members from the Royal Prince Edward Yacht Club (RPEYC) formed a syndicate to purchase a 26ft Couta boat Eloise (C101) from Melbourne. The purpose was to enable a group of keen and social sailors to share the cost of purchasing and maintaining a yacht, and also to increase the sailing activity at the RPEYC. The original syndicate was quickly sold-out, and so a second couta boat Makama (C77) was purchased in August that year. In 2017, the syndicate was christened “Sydney Couta Boats” (SCB) under a formal corporate structure regulated by ASIC.

Now there are 6 Couta boats located around Sydney Harbour, plus a similar-sized couta fleet based in Pittwater. Over the years, SCB and the RPEYC have become the base for sailing of these classic gaff-rigged boats on Sydney Harbour. To this end, we host the annual “Thistle Cup Regatta” each October, with couta boats competing from Sydney, Pittwater, Melbourne and even Perth in the past few years. The boats are raced regularly on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, and are used for social cruising at twilight in summer and on weekends throughout the year.
